Burundi

After a very succesful visit to Burundi in May 2011, Bridget Brook and Mark Bramlay are keen to speak to groups about their work and the situation in this part of Africa. They have first hand experience of the "Rainbow Centre" a centre which works in collaboration with foster families to care for vulnerable children. They also visited homes of children at risk, in the capital Bujumbura. The Mother's Union initiate many projects. One of these is a "goat" project. The team felt this would be a cause that people could identify with in their giving . The team also visited Lycee de Mantana a school with no running water. There are many trained staff but not enough classrooms. The school library is totally inadequate and the school has provided a book list of textbooks needed. It is hoped that people will be able to sponsor books for pupils. The team would also like to fund HIV testing kits for babies. They visited a tailoring workshop full of women who were all HIV positive as a result of rape. They had become disowned by their families. Money is needed to buy sewing machines to enable them to start their own businesses.Help is also needed with farming projects. If you would like a to hear more about this valuable work please contact a member of the RDOMC committee.

ARCHBISHOP BERNARD was in Romsey Abbey in November 2009 to take part in the special service when Bishop Paul Butler, Bishop of Southampton, said farewell to this Diocese and moved to become Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham.
