DR Congo
Formerly known as Zaire, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has active links with Winchester Diocese, particularly with the Deanery of Jersey. An early personal link within this diocese began when the son of a former Ampfield vicar, the Revd. Philip Ridsdale, became the first Bishop of Boga Zaire.
Today the Bishop of Winchester, the Rt. Revd. Michael Scot-Joynt is deeply involved with the Congo. He is Patron of the Congo Church Association, which supports the Anglican Church in as many ways as possible, through prayer and practical help. Bishop Michael has visited the DRC several times and is active in the House of Lords , bringing the plight of the Congolese to more general attention.
The Winchester Diocesan Overseas Churches Panel, which provides practical support to our four link Provinces, is currently financing a student for a three year degree course at the Anglican theological college, ISThA.
In spite of continuing war, the Anglican Church in Congo thrives and grows, providing a vital strength for literally millions of bereaved and dispossessed families. A major part of the work is in reconciliation and training the young people to take leadership roles. The stories coming out of the country are hugely inspiring and, in spite of continuing trauma, especially in the northeast, there is some hope for a more stable future.
